People often blink less completely when concentrating on a screen. That matters because blinking helps spread tears across the eye’s surface.

Review Display Settings Before Buying New Hardware

Many organizations can improve visual accessibility using settings already built into their operating systems and applications. Employees may not know these tools exist, or they may worry that changing them will interfere with standardized IT configurations.

Low-cost adjustments worth testing

  • Increase interface and text scaling.
  • Improve contrast between text and backgrounds.

A perfect workstation cannot correct farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia, binocular vision problems, or another eye condition. Employees may also have a prescription that works for distance but is not well suited to the specific distance of a desktop monitor.

Common reasons to schedule an eye examination include:

  • Recurring headaches during or after screen use
  • Blur that continues after taking a break
  • Frequent squinting or leaning toward the monitor
  • Double vision
  • Ongoing dryness or eye pain
  • Difficulty shifting focus between near and distant objects
  • A noticeable change in vision
